Healthy and Happy Asheras Health In order to ensure your Ashera's good health, it’s important to take it to a vet as soon as you bring it home. In addition to routine tests, such as for Feline AIDS, your Ashera will receive important immunizations that will help protect your pet from illness. Also, these immunizations are required by law in most states. You must take your Ashera to the vet once a year for additional immunizations, and any time that you notice changes in your Ashera's behavior such as lethargy, refusing to eat, bald patches or vomiting. Note that vomiting hairballs is normal for most cats, and this doesn’t necessitate a trip to the vet. Pay attention to your Ashera's behavior, so that you will notice should any changes occur. Drastic changes in play, eating, sleeping or energy should not be ignored. Declawing your Ashera is not recommended. Claws are an important part of a cat’s anatomy, and they use their claws for many things. Having the claws removed is like having the tips of their fingers amputated, and this practice should be avoided. If you must do something, consider have caps put on their claws. This will stop scratching, without removing the claws. You should have this done professionally as it is extremely difficult to do yourself. Another important step in keeping your Ashera healthy is the decision to make your pet an indoor cat. Indoor cats are healthier overall than outdoor cats. They are safe from other animals, car accidents and the transmission of diseases from other animals. Making the decision to keep your Ashera indoors is one of the best steps you can take to ensure the cat’s good health. Food and Weight While it’s tempting to purchase food that is less expensive, that may not be a decision that is good for your Ashera. Selecting a quality food is very important for the health of your Ashera. Many brands available at the grocery store don’t contain all that your Ashera needs. Instead, they are made with mostly fillers and not a lot of nutrition. Read the label. One of the first hints as to whether the food is of good quality or not can be found very easily on the ingredient list. You want the first ingredient to be a named meat source. Look for “beef”, “chicken” or “lamb” instead of just “meat”. If a named meat source is listed first, that means that is most prominent ingredient in the food, and that’s a good sign that the food is nutritious. Like people, Asheras should stay as close to their healthy weight as possible. Cats will only exercise when they want to. This is unlike dogs that will almost always jump at a chance to run and play in the yard. For this reason, it’s important to regulate the amount of food that your Ashera is allowed to eat. Most foods have recommended guidelines on the can or bag. Follow these guidelines and watch your Ashera's weight. Run your hands along your Ashera's ribs. You should be able to feel the ribs without having to press through a layer of fat. If you can’t, then consider purchasing a light food. If the weight still doesn’t come off, talk to your vet for other options. The Litter Box Some would say this is the only unpleasant part of owning a Ashera, but the good news is that cats are trained much more easily than dogs. Usually, just showing the Ashera the box a few times is all it takes. If your Ashera refuses to use the litter box, try changing the type of litter you are using. If that doesn’t work, talk to your vet for advice. The litter box should be located in the same place all of the time, so that the Ashera has no trouble locating it. It must be kept clean, so scoop it daily. Asheras are very unlikely to use a litter box that is not clean. That means they will find an alternate location, and you’ll have a mess to clean. Keeping the box clean takes only a couple of minutes a day, and ensures that your Ashera will not leave you surprises all over the house. Sleep, Play, Love One thing you will quickly notice about your Ashera is that it loves to sleep. Provide bedding, so your Ashera will have a comfortable place to nap. Your Ashera will likely find his own favorite spot. This could be on your couch, under the table or in the hallway. If possible, try putting your Ashera's bedding in that spot. Then, if you ever have to move, the bedding can move with the Ashera and make the transition a bit easier. Buy plenty of toys for your Ashera that will encourage activity. There are hundreds of cat toys available, and your Ashera isn’t likely to enjoy all of them. You’ll have to do some trial and error to find which toys encourage your Ashera to play. Also, purchase scratching posts as this will help discourage your Ashera from scratching your walls and furniture. Asheras need to scratch, so give them a place to do so that won’t destroy your belongings. While not as needy as dogs, cats still need to be petted and held sometimes. If your Ashera is purring and rubbing against your leg, try to give it a bit of attention. Treat your new best friend with the love and care he deserves, and your Ashera will love you for a lifetime!
